What is a Radio Network Controller?

Radio Network Controllers (RNC) are equipment that interface with the core network, control the radio transmitters and receivers in Node Bs, and perform other radio access and link maintenance functions (such as soft handoff) in a 3G wireless network. An RNC is similar in function to a base station controller, BSC, found in the 2G and 2.5G networks. Non-IP connections in an RNC are ATM-based.
