Application Example: Replacement of Dedicated SS7 Links

Why replace dedicated SS7 links?

An SS7/IP signaling offloading device, like the SEGway™ Link Replacement, can be positioned between SS7 nodes in traditional telephone networks and utilize next-generation SS7/IP signaling protocols to transparently route SS7 messages over IP networks. This allows network operators to potentially save the costs of dedicated SS7 links by using the offload device to route SS7 messages over shared-use packet networks.

They may also be able to take advantage of new opportunities of accessing SS7 signaling through IP networks when SS7 links are not available. Below are three potential configurations of this application based on hardware and redundancy requirements.

Direct SS7 Link Configuration (Point-to-Point)

Multi SS7 Link Configuration (Point-to-Multipoint)

High Availability Configuration (Redundant Point-to-Point)

What products do we provide in this application?

SEGway™ Link Replacement Devices: Connect SS7 network entities via traditional SS7 links and route SS7 messages between other SEGway devices over shared-use IP networks. Performance Technologies' SEGway SS7 over IP product family offers additional solutions for customers who require the following:

  • Concentration of SS7 traffic (i.e. taking four underutilized links, and concentrating their traffic onto one fully-utilized link)
  • Dynamic routing of data from one SS7 link to multiple end points

SEGway IP-Edge: Performs the initial conversion of SS7 messages to IP, for transmission to the SEGway IP-STP.

SEGway Mini-STP: Uses high-level SS7 functionality to act like a small STP when used in SS7 signaling networks. They provide SS7 message consolidation and network routing capabilities that can reduce the number of expensive SS7 links required in core SS7 networks.
